I thought that was a "given" ?

As much as I like the Electrick Start it could be that we have been suckered into this "E" World, I dont give rats about 911 except for the increased insurance costs/Airport screening etc ;) .

CDI was Heaps Better than Points, maybe EFI is just taking it Too Far?

Actually I think Vacuum Petrol Taps started this Dumbness, who was responsible for that?

With a functional Kickstarter a smaller/lighter battery can be employed.
I might have jumped a step.
How much does this Kickstarter weigh so far?
Battery is 3.5kg Airbox almost a kilo, my LifePo4 cw relay and starter cable is .7kg

The parts i have so far, including the kickstarter, are around 1.2kg. Complete kit including the two (to be made) sprockets will be close to 1.5 kg i guess.
If you can ditch the battery and the starter motor (including relais/wiring etc.) this could be a real weightsaver.

you can never get rid of the battery. it is not a flywheel magneto/

Yes,I was in a nostagilc mood where EFI was non existent... I have run a BS3 without a battery, not sure if you are able to start it though

The CX500 will start with a push apparently, haven't tried it though :) HeavyPig!
Depends on the design of the alternator doesn't it ?

Certainly EFI needs a Battey:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: But I have a Small one,,,, did I put that correctly:unsure:

after it started you can remove the battery but initially a certain excitation voltage is needed to get the thing going so no battery or a dead battery wont do. the very old designs (50s and pre-war) did not need that, they had permanent magnets that would create a field when turned but modern alternators are designed differently.

Generators vs Alternators, spinning a coil thru a Magnetic field and collecting the induced current.
When they had permanent magnets they just needed spinning and regulating, now they need to be Excited to work,, sounds like the younger Generation :ROFLMAO:

half a year since?

Since the start of this project i guess... Last couple of months have been hectic unfortunately. Health, job and house...
The good news is i found a bronze bushing that only needs a liitle bit of machining to fit. I already removed the coating inside the crankcase where the bushing will be placed. It is quite thin actually.

Pretty sure they people who designed the bike took longer and forgot all about the Kick starter as well .

Anyone having ideas how to make the right footpeg foldable so it stays in the up position for kick starting? The passenger peg uses a little ball but that won't work because the main footpeg has a spring.

I'm currently busy on the 500 conversion of my own bike so that has priority over project kickstart unfortunately. The tinkering never stops though... :)

Depends how permanent it should be. If you remove the rubber it is easy to fix a wire or hook that clips on to the brake arm running on top of the foodpeg. May not look all that fancy but will work until a genius comes up with a better solution.

Yeah, that will do for now. Then i think we are sorted for the outside engine part of the kickstarter project. So now i only have to fit the bushing in the crankcase and then design the last sprocket and kickstart mechanism. That sounds easier than it is...

any progress? whats the likelihood of getting it done this year?

I machined the bronze bushing and fitted it inside the crankcase. The spring of the bullet seems a viable application in this project. Just had to make a little bent to fit it. Essentially all parts to make it work are now inside the crankcase. Challenges left now are making the right endstops and aligning the sprocket with the idle gear (big challenge!).

This year is certainly not unrealistic. Depends a bit if i can find a sprocket fabricator that can make the gears without too much delay.
I certainly want this ready for next riding season so i can test it out. Looking forward to start with 6-speed also...

if its easy to make the plastic dummies you could mail them to me. i have a guy who makes sprockets 4 me, should be similar. may have to buy 10 each but i guess once it works i can get rid of those 😁
if laser cutting is an option a corel or eps file would suffice.

It should be a guy who has experience with gearbox/machine gears and not secondary drivetrain motorbike sprockets, thats a different league...
Maybe ask him first if he is able to replicate (and i mean not china style replicate) the tooth design of the sprocket on the clutch basket.
I think we also need a bearing/bushing inside the sprocket and the sprocket/teeth have to be chromed or hardened possibly. If he doesn't blink than it's worth a shot

OK, that is a problem. My contact is not doing it himself but outsources this work. this is india and anything anybody says can mean anything. So it would be a 90% risk to trust anything this guys says in terms of quality. I mean he once did bearing plugs for the swingarm where the black "powder coating" disappeared after 3 month in the sun. :(
