Kickstart for the Hima

- the brake pedal should be relocated to the backside of the frame (most off-road bikes i know have this, why RE put it on the outside is beyond my comprehension...). This shouldn't be that difficult but the brake pedal needs some modification.
I have no idea how you would accomplish that. from what I can see the brake pedal may be a deal breaker (which would be too bad!) unless of course we construct an entirely new way of actuating the brake - which would make the whole shebang expensive.

It seem more feasible to change the kick lever to kind of avoid the brake by maybe bending it in a way so it can avoid the brake? dunno if thats possible, just thinking aloud here.
btw: does the footrest stay up? we may also need to change those...

I concur, and not because of the kick, but because the Givis can squash your foot under the "right" conditions ...
" right" conditions ? I would think that is the "Wrong " conditions :ROFLMAO:

Relocating and modifying the brake pedal seems not that difficult from this point. Give me a couple of hours with the angle grinder and welder and a prototype will be finished. I have to figure out if relocating the master cylinder to the backside is necesarry or optional though. If the clutch cover was completely flat we could make a different bend in the kicklever, but thats not the case unfortunately.

If we end up with a kick design like the xr250r the kicklever will make about a 1/4 rotation which should be enough. Then the footpegs can stay as they are.

@barima when you finish the Kick Starter, how about a Decompressor mounted on the Tappet cover with or without remote control ;)

Not so keen on the Remote control nor the Kick starter really but I sure could use a Decompressor:ROFLMAO:

Lol, i have been thinking about a decompressor already. Just a little valve on the head would be cool. I certainly don't need an extra switch/lever or button on my handlebar 😅

Decompressor from the combustion chamber would need to exit through the Cam Chain tunnel the same angle as the spark plug, there is limited options there.
Tappet cover is a bit on the week side and not in a good position

Barima just informed via whatsapp that the parcel has arrived in the Netherlands.

Thanks Sam for sending the parts, this really helps a lot.

A quick update on the current state of project kickstart:

1. I updated the idle gear and clutch hub gear design and did a reprint. After mounting the parts and taking measurements, i am pretty sure the idle gear is very close (if not ready) to production stage.

2. The kickstart mechanism (from bullet/continentall GT?) is very old skool, simple and probably bulletproof (no pun intended...). I am pretty sure i can make it work in this design. They only drawback is that the pawl makes a clicking noise when the gear is turning (which is all the time when the engine is running). The gear is mounted inside the gearbox on UCE engines and thus much more isolated. The good news is when i mount the pawl on the downside it will probably run in oil because it will level with the oil in the clutch cover. The alternative would be a ratchet mechanism which is a bit more complicated to fit.

3. The kickstarter shaft is definately not the same diameter as the bullet version. I am still tinkering with it but i am almost sure RE had a 16mm shaft in mind. Luckily 16mm kickstarters are plenty available. I ordered one from my favourite chinese supplier and its definately in the right direction.

4. Which leads me to the mounting of the kickstarter shaft in the crankcase. The surface of the hole where the shaft is placed, is covered with engine coating. It also appears a bit conical.(around 15mm) I think RE ultimately would have reamed this hole to the final dimension(16mm...) in the production proces. For a one off item i would use a hand reamer but for a series this is probably not the best solution. Fitting a bronze bushing could be an option.

At this point i am 95% sure this project can be realized. Some bits are still vague as to how RE it had intended, but it will come around eventually.

Very encouraging! Thank you for the effort!
btw: during your research of the kicker issue did you come across a possible 6th gear solution in passing? just asking because the guy who long ago suggested the kicker (old frorum thread) also mentioned this as an option.

I keep forgetting to have a very close look at my R/H cover which has been off a few times but not as many as the Cam Cover :)
Having the Case Machined to accept the Shaft and a Seal is going to problematic I fear.
Hopefully I am wrong,

I really need to dismantle the engine completely to make an an educated guess about the 6 speed (preferably after project kickstart...) You can look at the gearbox through the backside of the crankshaft though. From what i see now, there is already space for a sixth gear on the gearshaft which makes life much easier. Another big questionmark is if the shiftdrum is already prepared for the extra gear. Then we have to think about gear ratios and finally if the gear indicator will go to 6 on the dashboard. Maybe i should quit my job

I think the 6th Gear is less of an achievement than the Kick starter, also you can't see the gear, but the Kick Start Lever will be visable.
With extra power, extra gears are less important and this bike will never be suited to motorways even with an extra gear, IMO

correct, the extra power AND a 16 tooth sprocket do much the same as an extra gear.

I am running stock gearing on both Bikes for purposes of Data collection and cost etc :)

At 100kph the Revs are about 5000rpm and the Tourque looks almost linear for another 12 to 15 hundred revs, I dont need Overdrive as I am afraid to go any faster anyhow. it is a Trail Bike after all:ROFLMAO:

Yeah, i hear you guys. It all depends on what purpose we define for our bikes i guess. On my friend's Himalayan (500cc) we are running 16/36 and he still complains about missing a sixth gear. Holland is completely flat and his bike pulls it off easy and there is hardly any off-road so he has a point i guess . For me i would like to have a short first gear for off-road and the sixth gear for decreasing rpm at cruising speeds

Im glad I have a Nice Car as well ;)
Motorcycles are fun, thats all.

I just ordered a kickstarter shaft with ratchet mechanism from my favourite chinese supplier. It should be a direct fit for the kickstarter i already received and the dimensions look quite good. In the meantime i will investigate the brake pedal issue.
