Cam Noise

I would have seen and fitted every Cam available for the Himalayan but have yet to try the Kent Cam from HMC.
The only report I have seen posted spoke of problems running and Noise, probably lost his Prieledges for that
After holding it in my hands I wondered about the shape of the Flanks so will try to explain what I mean.

The first pic shows the basics, Flank is where the Lift is shown.

Second pic shows a Broad and a Sharp Egg ( cam Lobe ) Himalayan has Roller Rockers.

Pic 3 shows what I mean about the Flank, see how the one on the Right dips in ?
The Kent Cam feels like that on Both sides !

Pic 5 , if you zoom in you can see air under the plastic that is stretched over the Flank.
I do not know what it means but wondered if it was Noisy

I will record the Start up with this Cam and we shall see if it is noisy.
Then put it on the Dyno and see if it's worth the Money, noise does not bother me if the number's are there!

If you look very closely at the shape of the Flank ( Vertical Face you can see in the second pic ! ) you can see it inverts between the Base Circle and the Lobe. Roller is spending More Time on the Cam per Rev

The 443 OverBore made 30.5 with H-T B ( and lots of other things ) so with all those other things kept and just the Cam swapped it may make more Power.
Thats my general line of thinking

Kent Cams has invested heavily in German Machines and does their Grinding with a variable speed so that the surface and grinder keep constant contact speed through the 360 deg of rotation.
I'm hoping that means more Power.

I could not wait until next year so the 443 went up on the Bench, did a compression test stone cold 26deg C 225psi then after the Kent Cam fitted 210psi.

The Extra Duration has taken 15psi ? who knows could be the percentage discrepancy of the Gauge but I doubt it.
Exhaust Valve clearance didn't vary, Inlet was just a bit tight, I had checked before removing the Cam ( 3 thou inlet 9 thou exhaust both firm ) and did not re adjust. This means the Base Circle is the Same !
Start-up involved taking it off the Bench, selecting 5th gear and rocking back until it stopped, Clutch in I the hit the starter with a bit of throttle it roared into life and was held at 2000 then 3000rpm for about 5 minutes. then after that I restarted and did the video.

Real test ride tomorrow should be good, ,,,


443cc, Mudded Head 34mm Throttle body Sauce Bottle Air box , Free flowing Exhaust with BTY header Wrapped ( hot Gass flows faster ! ) and sexy stainless steel slip on Muffler

And a Brisk spark plug

Idle is a bit high around 1500rpm and there is a strangle clicking, good thrash around the Block and drop the idle later I left the Tank bolts loose!

should I disconnect the TB from the cylinder or at least remove the air filter for compression measurements?
I cant understand why a stock 411 with stock head and stock gaskets shows 180 and in another measurement 200 (on the same bike but 1 year apart).

Carby or EFI ? new Cable or old stretched cable ?

Carbon build ups ? Rings bed in and fit better with time , Carbon assists in sealing the discrepancies where the cylinder and head gasket and Head combine.
Operator error is another factor that often wildly denied is in fact the case so often.

Throttle Bodies are okay because when you turn them Full Open they are Open , unlike when you have a C.V. Carby, you can hold the throttle fully open on a C.V. Carb Bike and the actual throttle only opens according to the Vacuum of the engine, not your Wrist.


So unfortunately along the way we have gotten incorrect data like when a customer of a Failed Mk1 piston is asked if they did a compression test, their answer may be worthless

The video shows briefly , my AFR gauge, it takes some of the guesswork out of it @Sasa applies the data to fine tune the Maps.

The Red Box is the best thing to have in the first place now, ( pity it took so long ) it almost makes me wish I had a Stock Himalayan to test it on instead of the heavily modified ones I have.

So I could convert one of my Stallions to a Gelding to prove a Point not going to happen!

But if a member here lived close enough to donate their bike for a Dyno run x 2, like Before and After I would do that Test.
Whats in it for them? a cheap RB perhaps or if they have already purchased the RB ( from us ! ), the Map Optimized by the Dyno Run and subsequent "Fine Tuning"

Cable could be an issue although I doubt it at 5000km. in both cases we talk about my BS6. in both cases the pistons/cylinders are brand new.
Operator error how? full throttle at the time of measurement. how much error can there be? battery was also just charged.

Bike needed help starting this morning, rolled back in 5th until I got the compression stroke and hit the button with the Clutch in.
I used to think it was because the Battery is too small.
Apart from Idling slightly higher than I would like at 1450, if went well.
Extra power between 5 and 7 thousand is noticeable.

AFR readings were like mid 14 to 1 at cruise and low 13 at 110kph

I was not able to test it to 8000rpm due to some safety thing thats programed into the RB, probably to stop it reaching its full potential or Blowing apart

Thats the next part of the Project .
